Maths at Hamilton
Mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us through developing a child’s ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, children learn to appreciate the contribution made by many cultures to the development and application of mathematics.
Mathematics is a core subject in the National Curriculum, and we use the New National Curriculum 2014 for Mathematics to implement the statutory requirements of the programme of study. We follow the White Rose Hub programme of study. It outlines the termly objectives by year and ensures fundamental skills and knowledge are mastered before moving to the next stage. The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress should be based on the security of the pupils’ understanding.
In our school Nursery and in Reception, teachers follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum New Framework (2021)
The teachers at Hamilton Academy seek to embed mathematics into a range of other subjects thus encouraging the links with everyday life.
