Reading at Hamilton
In Nursery, the aim is to develop children’s interest in books and reading whilst building on emerging reading skills. Daily stories, group storytelling and discussion underpin all play activities in Nursery. Children are taught how stories are structured and become familiar with patterns in storytelling. Children are encouraged to use developing phonic understanding in preparation for moving up to Reception.
Daily phonics sessions taught using ‘Letters and Sounds’ provide the foundation for teaching reading in reception. Books without words are used to tell stories with pictures and children listen to a range of stories by quality, well established authors to encourage a love of reading. Children move on to segmenting sounds, blending sounds and learning High Frequency words. Daily guided reading sessions are supported by a wide range of non-fiction and fiction texts and regular home reading is expected to support learning.
KS1 and KS2
Throughout KS1 and KS2, children are taught reading through discrete daily guided reading sessions and shared and independent reading opportunities. A wide range of non-fiction and fiction texts are used to support the teaching of reading both at school and home. In both Key Stages, ‘real books’ are used alongside established quality reading schemes. Each building at Hamilton Academy has a library that children use to access both fiction and non-fiction texts.
In KS1, daily discrete phonics sessions are taught using ‘Letters and Sounds’. This structured programme develops phonics knowledge in six phases and children are taught in small groups according to reading ability. This phonics knowledge is applied across daily guided and shared reading sessions.
In KS2, children who need further reading support in reading, receive further phonics teaching in small groups or on an individual basis.
Home reading diaries are used by every Year group across both KS1 and KS2 and daily home reading is expected to support children in their learning. Key assessment questions are published in the diaries to support parents.
